This week (7 June 2016) Twitter announced and rolled-out a new version for Android users.
The look and feel of the app has been altered slightly, although all previous functionality remains. The enhancements are in three areas:
- The most obvious change is the new “floating action button”, which remains in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This provides single-click, easy access to the tweet composing screen.
- There is a new navigation menu which slides out from the left of the screen, providing access to your Profile, Highlights, Lists and “Connect” (which presents top trending items and accounts; a “Find friends” feature; and prompts you with a curated list of suggested accounts to follow).
- The final change is the Tab bar at the top of the screen, with swipe functionality enabling you to switch to and from Home, Moments, Notifications and DMs.
With any change to the UX or new functionality, Twitter – and other social media sites – risk alienating users who are used to a previous version. But, with this set of enhancements, Twitter seems to have taken some small, manageable steps, which should speed up use and increase engagement, without upsetting traditionalists.
